Scott Tillman Named Assistant Head of School for Spiritual Life

Longtime Bible faculty member and veteran minister will lead spiritual formation across Lipscomb Academy beginning August 1.

Scott Tillman’s appointment follows a months-long search for a leader who could build upon the academy's strong tradition of spiritual formation and continue the momentum of meaningful work already underway.

“I love this school dearly, and I want it to thrive,” said Tillman. “We are going to build on the incredible foundation that was laid before us. I am a minister at heart, and more than anything, I want to introduce individuals to Jesus.”

Founded 135 years ago on a solid Christian foundation, Lipscomb Academy remains rooted in the core beliefs that shaped its earliest days. Those beliefs are expressed in the school's mission: to be a Christ-centered community preparing learners for purposeful lives through rigorous academics and transformative experiences. Tillman's appointment reflects the academy's ongoing commitment to that mission and its gratitude for the faithfulness and vision that have strengthened spiritual life across the community.

“When I first met Scott, I made an instant connection with him. His compassion and love for Lipscomb Academy are genuine and evident to all those who know him,” stated Dr. James Hutchins, Lipscomb Academy Head of School. “From my interactions with him, I know he is spiritually grounded and rooted in the Word and deeply passionate about the work he is doing. It became evident to me that he will lead the spiritual life of the academy with prayerful discernment and a steadfast commitment to nurturing the faith of students, faculty, and staff.”

In his new role, Tillman will provide spiritual leadership and vision for Lipscomb Academy and align academic objectives with spiritual goals. He will offer a pastoral presence throughout the academy community and partner with faculty and staff to integrate faith into teaching and mentoring.

Tillman will also oversee spiritual formation programming and service opportunities for all students, including direction of chapel at every level, while continuing to lead upper school chapel.

Tillman brings 33 years of ministry and pastoral care to the position. He currently serves as associate minister at Church of Christ in Green Hills where he has served the congregation for 23 years. Prior to that, he served as youth minister for 10 years at Hillsboro Church of Christ and Church of Christ in Green Hills.

A relational leader who casts vision, builds healthy culture, develops leaders, and integrates faith across all he does, Tillman is passionate about helping individuals encounter Christ and discover their God-given purpose. Those who know him recognize his humble heart for the Lord, a quality he will draw on as he uses his testimony to build others up and equip them to proclaim Jesus.

“Every day, I am listening for the Holy Spirit’s direction and guidance, and with this new role, I feel the Spirit’s nudging that I ‘have been brought here for such a time as this,’” continued Tillman. “I am excited to step into this Kingdom work and encourage those within our community.”

Alongside his ministry work, Tillman has dedicated 32 years to Lipscomb Academy as a teacher, athletic administrator, and coach. He has taught and coached for 25 years mentoring students both inside and outside the classroom.

As assistant athletic director, he provided 11 years of strategic leadership across coaching, program development, budgets, facilities, and student-athlete growth. He also served six years as head football coach where he emphasized character, leadership, teamwork, and competitive excellence.

Tillman feels called to help students grow into servant leaders who positively impact their communities. His love for Lipscomb Academy is evident, and he is eager to use his gifts to love people well as the academy looks ahead to the next chapter of its faith journey.

Tillman has a Master of Theology and a Bachelor of Arts in Speech Communication, both from Lipscomb University.
