Mary Papillion Will Represent the 5th Congressional District in Capitol Art Exhibition.
Lipscomb Academy senior Mary Papillion of Brentwood, Tennessee, has been awarded first prize in the 2022 Congressional Arts Competition. Ms. Papillion's artwork, 'Angela Davis,' will be displayed at the U.S. Capitol in the Cannon tunnel
Third place was awarded to Clarke Williamson, a senior at Lipscomb Academy, for her artwork titled 'Wakanda Forever.'
The Congressional Arts Competition is now in its 40th year of honoring the work of outstanding high school students around the country. Each Congressional District selects one piece of artwork to represent the 5th District in the annual art exhibition, which thousands of visitors will see in Washington, D.C. and the Capitol.
"We have great artists here in Nashville," Congressman Cooper said in announcing the contest winners. "Each of the entries showed outstanding talent and creativity. All of the participating students and their art teachers are to be congratulated on their impressive work."
Judges for the competition included Kathy Buggs, Director of Neighborhoods at Metropolitan Government of Davidson County. Phil Ponder Nashville watercolor artist, is known for his hand-painted iconic architectural imagery. James Threalkill, Nashville Expressive Realism painter, known for his hand-painted jazz musicians entranced in moments of lyrical spontaneity. Latasha T. Thomas, General Attorney at the Office of the Solicitor (Department of Labor) in Nashville, Tennessee.
As the first-place winner, Mary will be awarded a certificate from Southwest Airlines and two round-trip tickets to Washington, D.C., to attend the opening reception of the art exhibition featuring the winning entries from around the country. She will also be eligible for a $3,000 art scholarship from the Savannah College of Art and Design.
